For large Prairie-based companies facing pressure to modernize, reshore supply chains, or respond to global trade disruptions, the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) offers a pathway to pursue ambitious, high-impact projects. Delivered in the Prairies by Prairies Economic Development Canada and building on the federal government’s long-standing innovation agenda, this program is geared toward businesses undertaking transformative investments that strengthen Canada’s industrial competitiveness.

SIF focuses on projects with the scale to move the needle—think major technology upgrades, advanced manufacturing, large R&D initiatives, or infrastructure that supports commercialization and long-term growth. Companies in sectors such as steel, aluminum, automotive, forest products, artificial intelligence, cleantech, and other advanced technologies are particularly well aligned. Funding is provided as non-repayable support and can be substantial, with contribution levels varying depending on the size, scope, and strategic importance of the project. Beyond innovation, the program also recognizes the need to protect good jobs, reinforce domestic supply chains, and help industries adapt to tariffs and shifting global markets.
