Strategic Energy Management for Industry (SEMI)

Offered by Government of Alberta, Emissions Reduction Alberta

Alberta Manufacturing Mining & Natural Resources Energy & Utilities Construction & Real Estate

Program Overview

Rising energy costs and pressure to improve efficiency are top concerns for many of Alberta’s industrial operators, especially in energy‑intensive sectors like manufacturing, mining, agriculture, transportation, and utilities. The Strategic Energy Management for Industry (SEMI) program was created to help facilities turn energy management into a long‑term competitive advantage, not just a one‑time upgrade. Delivered by Emissions Reduction Alberta with funding from the Government of Alberta, SEMI supports organizations that want to better understand their energy use, build internal expertise, and reduce operating costs while cutting emissions.

SEMI is designed to meet businesses where they are in their energy journey. Companies can receive significant non‑repayable funding—ranging from tens of thousands to up to around one million dollars per facility—to support activities like in‑depth energy assessments, implementing energy management information systems, staff training in strategic energy management, and major energy‑efficient retrofit projects. For for‑profit businesses, funding typically offsets a meaningful portion of project costs, while not‑for‑profit and Indigenous organizations may be eligible for even higher coverage. The program focuses on facilities that have been operating in Alberta and rely on fixed equipment or processes, making it particularly relevant for established operations.

With limited funding available and strong interest across Alberta’s industrial sectors, understanding how SEMI works and whether your facility is a good fit is key. Exploring the full program details can help determine how this opportunity could support your energy, cost‑reduction, and sustainability goals.
