Offered by Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario
Housing builders and manufacturers in Northern Ontario facing rising costs, labour shortages, and pressure to deliver homes faster have an opportunity to rethink how housing gets built. The Regional Homebuilding Innovation Initiative for Northern Ontario is designed to help businesses and organizations adopt new construction approaches that can increase housing supply while improving efficiency and resilience. Delivered by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario (FedNor), this initiative supports projects that modernize the residential construction supply chain and bring innovative housing solutions to market.
The program focuses on forward-looking construction methods such as modular and panelized housing, mass timber, 3D printing, and net-zero or climate-resilient designs. Funding support is provided on a non-repayable basis and varies by project, helping offset costs tied to technology adoption, equipment, product development, and scaling manufacturing capacity. It’s particularly relevant for companies and organizations that want to move from traditional build methods toward off-site construction, advanced manufacturing, or commercialization of new housing technologies tailored to Northern Ontario’s needs.
As part of Canada’s broader Housing Plan, this initiative is currently accepting applications and aims to strengthen local housing supply chains while accelerating innovation in the sector. For businesses and organizations considering a housing innovation project, learning more about how this program works can help determine whether it fits your growth and development plans.
