Offered by Government of Canada, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada
For Canadian organizations looking to participate in large-scale, international research and innovation projects, Horizon Europe opens the door to opportunities that are difficult to access through domestic programs alone. As the world’s largest research and innovation initiative, Horizon Europe allows Canadian businesses, researchers, and institutions to collaborate with global partners on ambitious projects that address complex societal and technological challenges.
Through Canada’s participation, supported by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, eligible organizations can take part in Pillar 2 projects, which focus on collaborative research across thematic areas such as health, security, climate and energy, digital and emerging technologies, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing. These projects typically involve multinational consortia and are designed to move ideas from research through to real-world application. Funding is non-repayable and varies by project scope, often supporting a significant share of eligible research and development costs, making it especially valuable for innovation-driven SMEs, startups, universities, and non-profits.
Beyond financial support, Horizon Europe offers Canadian participants the chance to build long-term international partnerships, access global expertise, and position their innovations within competitive global value chains. Applications are currently being accepted for certain calls, and understanding the structure, expectations, and evaluation process is key to success. Exploring the full details can help determine whether Horizon Europe aligns with your organization’s research or innovation goals.
