Green Freight Program — Assess and Retrofit

Offered by Government of Canada, Natural Resources Canada

National Transportation & Logistics

Program Overview

Rising fuel costs and mounting pressure to reduce emissions have made efficiency upgrades a priority for freight operators across Canada. For trucking and logistics businesses running medium- and heavy-duty fleets, the Green Freight Program — Assess and Retrofit was designed to help turn those goals into action by offsetting the cost of evaluating fleet performance and installing proven fuel‑saving technologies. Delivered nationally by Natural Resources Canada, this stream focused on practical, near-term improvements that could reduce operating expenses while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Through this funding stream, eligible fleets were able to receive support for third‑party fleet energy assessments that identify where fuel is being wasted and which upgrades deliver the best return. Businesses could also access non‑repayable contributions covering roughly half the cost of approved truck and trailer retrofits, such as aerodynamic devices or other efficiency-enhancing equipment. For companies undertaking larger projects, total funding support could reach into the hundreds of thousands, making it easier to justify investments that improve performance across multiple vehicles.

Although the Assess and Retrofit stream is now closed, it reflects the federal government’s broader push to modernize Canada’s freight sector and reduce emissions from existing fleets. Understanding how this program worked can be useful for transportation and logistics businesses preparing for similar opportunities or future funding rounds focused on fleet efficiency and decarbonization.
