Alberta Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (AICEI)

Offered by Prairies Economic Development Canada

Alberta Saskatchewan Manitoba

Program Overview

For many Indigenous communities, clean energy presents a powerful opportunity to strengthen local economies, reduce energy costs, and advance community-led sustainability goals. Turning those ideas into viable projects, however, can be complex without the right guidance and early-stage support. The Alberta Indigenous Clean Energy Initiative (AICEI) was created to help bridge that gap, working directly with First Nations and Métis communities that are exploring renewable energy or energy efficiency projects across Alberta and, more broadly, the Prairie provinces.

Delivered by Prairies Economic Development Canada in collaboration with Indigenous and clean energy partners, AICEI is designed to meet communities where they are. Support can begin with early conversations about priorities and capacity, then extend through feasibility work, project planning, and ultimately funding support to help move projects forward. Initiatives may range from solar, wind, or biomass generation to building retrofits, energy audits, and other efficiency improvements, as well as training and leadership development that strengthens long-term community capacity. Funding is non-repayable and tailored to the scope and readiness of each project, making it easier to pursue ideas that align with community goals.

AICEI remains open to discussions on an ongoing basis, whether a community has a fully formed project or is just starting to explore clean energy options. Learning more about how this initiative works can help determine whether it’s the right fit for your community’s vision.
